Noesis and Noema.
A few months ago, I went to a concert at the Getty Museum to see one of my favorite pianists, Dustin O'Halloran, (second, if only, to Philip Glass) play (for lack of a better term.) Experiencing his talent in person surpassed my wildest expectations; every hair on my body stood like a soldier at attention, my eyes half-full of tears for nothing short of two hours straight. It shouldn't have surprised me to find other artistic geniuses in the audience, as his music is one of the greatest creative catalysts I've discovered to date.
Upon exiting, my guest and I stepped into the elevator heading down to the parking garage with none other than David Lynch, who was also there to see Mr. O'Halloran's astonishing performance. We made small talk about trying to remember where exactly we parked ("I think it was this floor?"), and ironically, his lackadaisical disposition somewhat reminded me of my own father. His unobtrusiveness and the casual nature of the encounter almost led me to forget that I was standing in the presence of one of our generation's most visionary minds. Without care or thought to whether one likes (or dislikes) Lynch's work, it is undeniable that the way in which he processes and communicates information offers a highly unique and unparalleled perspective. He transforms ordinary artistic mediums to a level of unprecedented ingenuity. (Feel free to insert your own "un"-something adjectives where deemed necessary.) Lynch's work has pushed my consciousness into both areas of extreme discomfort and paralyzing realization. Often times, I don't particularly care for the pictures he paints in my mind's eye, as he single-handedly has demolished the walls of my comfort zone on numerous occasions, but I've come to believe that is precisely what is the difference between art that is and art that is effective.
Lynch's current project, "Dark Night of the Soul" (a visual/auditory exhibit in which he has paired with musicians Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse) has moved to Miami for the next month. If you are lucky enough to experience this project first hand, then for better or worse, if nothing else, I have faith that it will leave you altered, thus truly succeeding in it's purpose.www.dnots.com
From the Dark Night of the Soul website :
Dark Night of the Soul is a full-length album and illustrated book, combining the talents of Danger Mouse, David Lynch and celebrated rock recluse Sparklehorse. In addition to the hardcover book, the album includes vocals from the Flaming Lips, Julian Casablancas of The Strokes, Frank Black of the Pixies, Iggy Pop, Nina Persson of The Cardigans, Suzanne Vega and many others. The exhibition consists of over 50 original photographs by David Lynch which are displayed alongside the accompanying soundtrack by Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse.

Reverie.
Phenomenal director, Stefan Nadelman (Menomena's Evil Bee, Saturday Night Live) lends his visionary mind, hand and eye to one of Portland's newest indie ventures, Ramona Falls. Even the most experienced artists and animators will have a difficult time denying his innovative technique and portrayal. In this music video, Nadelman creates a periscope in which the viewer is visually transported into an alternate reality, one of which I would like to revisit more often than not.

"If I had a world of my own, everything would be nonsense."
Undeniably, the greatest mind of all time, Albert Einstein, was quoted in saying, "Imagination is more important than knowledge."
Since I was a little girl, Alice was the only Disney (and later when introduced to Lewis Carroll, literary) character I ever felt a deep connection with. She was not like the other girls; not a queen, never a princess, not a damsel in distress, nor a leader of the minions. Alice was different; she was a clever day-dreamer who self-seekingly created her own world, filled with whimsical oddities and curious anomalies, simply to escape the mundane existence of the physical world. Simply, an ordinary girl with an extraordinary imagination. Her eccentric reality gave validation to my own mental departure from all things certain. Alice gave me the freedom to indulge in my own curiosities, and taught me how to explore the unfamiliar, how to question the rational and how to dream the unimaginable.
With yet another remake of this moralistic tale arriving soon, I have no doubt that Tim Burton's version will help to inspire others in visualizing and actualizing their own "nonsensical" realities.

Thuis. Casa. Accueil. Heim. Domov. Inicio. Home.
If you've never seen the documentary released in 2007 by Sigur Rós, the time has come to right your wrong.
Excerpt from the Heima website :
Heima : An introduction
Last year, in the endless magic hour of the Icelandic summer, Sigur Rós played a series of concerts around their homeland. Combining both the biggest and smallest shows of their career, the entire tour was filmed, and now provides a unique insight into one of the world’s shyest and least understood bands captured live in their natural habitat.
The culmination of more than a year spent promoting their hugely successful ‘Takk…’ album around the world, the Icelandic tour was free to all-comers and went largely unannounced. Playing in deserted fish factories, outsider art follies, far-flung community halls, sylvan fields, darkened caves and the hoofprint of Odin’s horse, Sleipnir*, the band reached an entirely new spectrum of the Icelandic population; young and old, ardent and merely quizzical, entirely by word-of-mouth.
The question of the way Sigur Rós’s music relates to, and is influenced by, their environment has been reduced to a journalistic cliché about glacial majesty and fire and ice, but there is no doubt that the band are inextricably linked to the land in which they were forged. And the decision to film this first-ever Sigur Rós film in Iceland was, in the end, ineluctable.
Shot using a largely Icelandic crew (to minimise Eurovision-style scenic-wonder overload), ‘Heima’ - which means both “at home” and “homeland” - is an attempt to make a film every bit as big, beautiful and unfettered as a Sigur Rós album. As such it was always going to be something of a grand folie, but one, which taking in no fewer than 15 locations around Iceland (including the country’s largest ever concert at the band’s Reykjavik homecoming), is never less than epic in its ambition.
Material from all four of the band’s albums is featured, including many rare and notable moments. Among these are a heart-stopping rendition of the previously unreleased ‘Gitardjamm’, filmed inside a derelict herring oil tank in the far West Fjords; a windblown, one-mic recording of ‘Vaka’, shot at a dam protest camp subsequently drowned by rising water; and first time acoustic versions of such rare live beauties as ‘Staralfur’, ‘Agaetis Byrjun’ and ‘Von’.

Los Angeles loved Bob Mitchell.
Thanks to the folks at LA-underground.net for posting this blurb today :
Bob Mitchell, longtime organist at the Silent Movie Theatre, passed away on the 4th of July at the age of 96. Chances are if you've ever been to see one of the many silver screen classics at the Theatre or at various silent film revival nights around town, you've seen Mr. Mitchell on organ or piano accompanying the films. As regular attendees of SMT/Cinefamily and just huge fans of the man who's been a cherished local icon for nearly a century, we will miss him dearly. There will be a short memorial service for Mr. Mitchell at the Silent Movie Theatre on Wednesday prior to the 8pm screening of Greta Garbo's Love.

Yet another one of my many latest obsessions, Florence and The Machine. I'm so ready for this album to drop. They create the sounds that tell my blood to rush.
The louder the better. Listen : Florence And The Machine - Blinding
Boys, Boys, Boys.
A young artist with a bright future, New Orleans born photographer, Musa Alves, describes her 3 part 'Boys' collection :
"When shooting ‘boys,’ I shared deep intimacies that were spontaneously captured ‘in the moment.’ The intimacy may have lasted years, months or for the duration of the shoot. Regardless, the moment was, and now is the meaning.
My main focus on men is based on sexual manipulation behind and in front of the camera. Using my sexuality in my art, and getting it in return from others."

A price for peace.
Since last Friday's Iranian Presidential Election, cities across Iran are are up in arms over suspicions of fraudulent voter tallying in order to re-elect Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the president. Supporters of reform candidate Mir Hossein Mousavi, are taking to the streets with both peaceful and violent protests against the Iranian government. In Tehran, amongst other cities in Iran, police and security are attempting to forcibly control and end all demonstrations. As of right this moment, 19 civilians have been confirmed deceased, but hospitals report the tolls could be as high as 150. News organizations around the world are airing footage of protesters being arrested, beaten and injured by Iranian police forces. Keep in mind, that many of the protests are peaceful and some even silent.

Also I like to Rock.
One of my favorite up-and-coming indie bands, AMAZING BABY ("the collective specialise in dreamy, self-consciously anthemic yet effortlessly cool reverb-tastic rock with a mix of psych, punk and pop thrown in for good measure") will be playing at the UCLA Hammer Museum on 7/2/09, with guests Band of Skulls & Dazzler. Already making a splash in the UK, their debut album drops in the U.S. on June 23rd. If you're in the L.A. area, I suggest popping in to see their skills live.

50 / 1.
Again, New Orleans filmmaker Benjamin Reece blows me away with his vision. This is a segment of his Fifty People, One Question project, recently taken to the streets of London. I've always found film to be quite possibly the most powerful medium for movement. There's something woven deep within this piece that instills sensitivity, and even compassion, for lives quite different than your own. Which truly, is what it's all about; learning to love all people, all things. We're lucky to have tools like this one to assist us along that journey...

What Would It Look Like?
What if the world embodied our highest potential? What would it look like? As the structures of modern society crumble, is it enough to respond with the same tired solutions? Or are we being called to question a set of unexamined assumptions that form the very basis of our civilization?
This 25-minute retrospective asks us to reflect on the state of the world and ourselves, and to listen more closely to what is being asked of us at this time of unprecedented global transformation. - excerpt from the Global Oneness website

Fourteen Autumns and Fifteen Winters.
The definition of being "poetic" is : With rhythm and beauty; related to poetic composition; Expressed in metrical form; exhibiting the imaginative or the rhythmical quality of poetry; characterized by romantic imagery.
For me, defining something as being poetic is quite simple : Regardless of what the art or medium is, the more I experience it, the further into it I fall.

Points of view.
Recently, I came across this article about the importance of setting goals...
http://www.associatedcontent.comarticle/349963/setting_goals_and_having_dreams_makes.html
Aaaand...I've decided to follow the lead of comedian Demetri Martin (skip to 5:53 in the following video)...
...by setting up my very own personal point system. Currently trying to decipher what exactly I want to include in my goals, whether on a daily, weekly, life-long basis. This should be an interesting challenge to undertake, especially when being fully committed to following what really lies at the center of it all, what the true purpose of evaluating and achieving goals really is. Imagine what kind of changes would come about in this world if we all were to take just a little bit of time to physically assess (on paper) the true achievements we desire to make every day. For one, I have no doubt that Earth would be filled with a lot more positive and focused energy. For now, I'll focus on doing my own tiny part to be ultimately integrated into the better, bigger picture.

Spy vs. Spy
Here is why I like the Internet :
- The ability to promote, issue, change, teach, help, reach, search, learn, contact, create and connect with anyone or anything, that you might not be able to in the tangible world, and all at the tips of your fingers.
Here is why I do not like the Internet :
- It has given us permission to hide behind who we pretend to be, and not who we really are. Which, not only enables us, but encourages us to be cowardly.
- For putting us within arms reach with practically anyone we want, it has single-handedly broken down the art of communication. If you have something to say, why would you talk about it in some sort of a cryptic, beat-around-the-bush blog posting? Or in a passive aggressive 'status update'? What ever happened to good old-fashioned confrontation? Ewww...how dare I utter such a dirty word? Ironically, the definition of the word "internet" includes both of the terms "connection" and "communication."
- Social networking. Well, I have a kind of love and hate relationship with it; let me explain. Although I am a member of most of these sites, and find them incredibly useful (and addicting), I think they may possibly be a part of a conspiracy against the natural state of humility in all of us. I have come to believe that sites like MySpace, Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, etc. have contributed to an overwhelming escalation of narcissism of the people on our planet. With seemingly harmless questions like, "What are you up to?", "What's on your mind?", or quizzes on your top five favorite romantic-comedies (I mean, what Susan Sarandon film don't you like?), aren't we becoming a little too self-indulgent with our time? Not only do we answer these questions to distract ourselves from the boredom we're facing in the external world, we answer them because we truly believe that someone wants to know these things. I mean, why wouldn't they, right? We're oh-so interesting. I, for one, am incredibly relieved to know that you're Really sick of sitting in traffic or that Holy crap, this is the best piece of cheese you've ever eaten! And, do PLEASE post the latest pictures of your cat, Elmo, drinking from the toilet again. Oh, that Elmo...always up to something. !Newsflash! I don't give a shit. And you shouldn't care about what book I'm reading or what cereal I'm eating or what blog I'm posting. You know why? Because it's only feeding the ego that's already inflated from the 10 "UR SO HOT" comments I've received on some half-naked picture I took with my outstretched left arm. Don't get me wrong, I completely succumb to it, myself, which means I do deserve the "hypocrite" sign that's hung outside my door. I'm not here to judge, I just wonder if we should stop thinking so much about ourselves, and start spending time updating things that really matter? Like life? Like the world? But, I'll get to those things later, once I finish posting this on my Facebook.

Dark matter or "The Absence of Light."
Report from the Hubble 3/12/09 :
"When it comes to finding dark matter in space, astronomers need to go on sort of a ghost hunt. Dark matter can't be directly seen or isolated in a laboratory. Yet it makes up the bulk of the matter in the universe. It (DARK MATTER) is the invisible scaffolding for the formation of stars and galaxies. Dark matter is not made of the same stuff that stars, planets, and people are made of. That stuff is normal 'baryonic' matter, consisting of electrons, protons, and neutrons. For 80 years astronomers have known about dark matter's 'ghostly' pull on normal matter. They've known that without the gravitational 'glue' of dark matter galaxy clusters would fly apart, and even galaxies would have a hard time holding together."
Interesting.
Even contemporary physicists, such as David Bohm, protege of Einstein, tells us: "When physicists calculate the minimum amount of energy a wave can possess, they find that every cubic centimeter of empty space contains more energy than the total energy of all the matter in the known universe!" In fact, Bohm tells us that "space is NOT empty, it is FULL, a plenum as opposed to a vacuum, and is the ground for the existence of everything, including ourselves."
And what exactly does that tell us? That even on the most basic, scientific level (without even grazing the surface of existentialism) that what we know to be emptiness (or empty space), contains not only energy and light, but the potentiality for all unseen outcomes.
...Coming full circle back to the study of quantum physics, as usual.

Current reads.
My Stroke of Insight by Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor, PhD.
A brain scientist's journey from a debilitating stroke to full recovery becomes an inspiring exploration of human consciousness and its possibilities :
On the morning of December 10, 1996, Jill Bolte Taylor, a thirty-seven-year-old Harvard-trained brain scientist, experienced a massive stroke when a blood vessel exploded in the left side of her brain. A neuroanatomist by profession, she observed her own mind completely deteriorate to the point that she could not walk, talk, read, write, or recall any of her life, all within the space of four brief hours. As the damaged left side of her brain--the rational, grounded, detail- and time-oriented side--swung in and out of function, Taylor alternated between two distinct and opposite realties: the euphoric nirvana of the intuitive and kinesthetic right brain, in which she felt a sense of complete well-being and peace; and the logical, sequential left brain, which recognized Jill was having a stroke, and enabled her to seek help before she was lost completely.
In My Stroke of Insight, Taylor shares her unique perspective on the brain and its capacity for recovery, and the sense of omniscient understanding she gained from this unusual and inspiring voyage out of the abyss of a wounded brain. It would take eight years for Taylor to heal completely. Because of her knowledge of how the brain works, her respect for the cells composing her human form, and most of all an amazing mother, Taylor completely repaired her mind and recalibrated her understanding of the world according to the insights gained from her right brain that morning of December 10th.
Today Taylor is convinced that the stroke was the best thing that could have happened to her. It has taught her that the feeling of nirvana is never more than a mere thought away. By stepping to the right of our left brains, we can all uncover the feelings of well-being and peace that are so often sidelined by our own brain chatter. A fascinating journey into the mechanics of the human mind, My Stroke of Insight is both a valuable recovery guide for anyone touched by a brain injury, and an emotionally stirring testimony that deep internal peace truly is accessible to anyone, at any time.

I'm signing a suicide pact with Indie 103.1.
Word on the street is that Indie 103.1 FM has been taken off the air effective immediately, and there may something we can do about it...

From the Indie 103 website :
BYE INDIE, HELLO DIGITAL INDIE !!
This is an important message for the Indie 103.1 Radio Audience :
Indie 103.1 will cease broadcasting over this frequency effective immediately. Because of changes in the radio industry and the way radio audiences are measured, stations in this market are being forced to play too much Britney, Puffy and alternative music that is neither new nor cutting edge. Due to these challenges, Indie 103.1 was recently faced with only one option --- to play the corporate radio game.
We have decided not to play that game any longer. Rather than changing the sound, spirit, and soul of what has made Indie 103.1 great Indie 103.1 will bid farewell to the terrestrial airwaves and take an alternative course.
This could only be done on the Internet, a place where rules do not apply and where new music thrives; be it grunge, punk, or alternative simply put, only the best music.
For those of you with a computer at home or at work, log on to www.indie1031.com and listen to the new Indie 103.1 - which is really the old Indie 103.1, not the version of Indie 103.1 we are removing from the broadcast airwaves.
We thank our listeners and advertisers for their support of the greatest radio station ever conceived, and look forward to continuing to deliver the famed Indie 103.1 music and spirit over the Internet to passionate music listeners around the world.
