Bob Mitchell, longtime organist at the Silent Movie Theatre, passed away on the 4th of July at the age of 96. Chances are if you've ever been to see one of the many silver screen classics at the Theatre or at various silent film revival nights around town, you've seen Mr. Mitchell on organ or piano accompanying the films. As regular attendees of SMT/Cinefamily and just huge fans of the man who's been a cherished local icon for nearly a century, we will miss him dearly. There will be a short memorial service for Mr. Mitchell at the Silent Movie Theatre on Wednesday prior to the 8pm screening of Greta Garbo's Love.

A young artist with a bright future, New Orleans born photographer, Musa Alves, describes her 3 part 'Boys' collection :

"When shooting ‘boys,’ I shared deep intimacies that were spontaneously captured ‘in the moment.’ The intimacy may have lasted years, months or for the duration of the shoot. Regardless, the moment was, and now is the meaning.
My main focus on men is based on sexual manipulation behind and in front of the camera. Using my sexuality in my art, and getting it in return from others."

A price for peace.

Since last Friday's Iranian Presidential Election, cities across Iran are are up in arms over suspicions of fraudulent voter tallying in order to re-elect Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the president. Supporters of reform candidate Mir Hossein Mousavi, are taking to the streets with both peaceful and violent protests against the Iranian government. In Tehran, amongst other cities in Iran, police and security are attempting to forcibly control and end all demonstrations. As of right this moment, 19 civilians have been confirmed deceased, but hospitals report the tolls could be as high as 150. News organizations around the world are airing footage of protesters being arrested, beaten and injured by Iranian police forces. Keep in mind, that many of the protests are peaceful and some even silent.

Watching this situation the past few days has allowed me distance from any of my own personal troubles, and to reflect on precisely how fortunate I truly am. In a time when there seems to be so many things wrong with my own country, I've never been more thankful to be an American.

One of my favorite up-and-coming indie bands, AMAZING BABY ("the collective specialise in dreamy, self-consciously anthemic yet effortlessly cool reverb-tastic rock with a mix of psych, punk and pop thrown in for good measure") will be playing at the UCLA Hammer Museum on 7/2/09, with guests Band of Skulls & Dazzler. Already making a splash in the UK, their debut album drops in the U.S. on June 23rd. If you're in the L.A. area, I suggest popping in to see their skills live.

Again, New Orleans filmmaker Benjamin Reece blows me away with his vision. This is a segment of his Fifty People, One Question project, recently taken to the streets of London. I've always found film to be quite possibly the most powerful medium for movement. There's something woven deep within this piece that instills sensitivity, and even compassion, for lives quite different than your own. Which truly, is what it's all about; learning to love all people, all things. We're lucky to have tools like this one to assist us along that journey...
